abstract = {Nodal Aberration Theory (NAT) was developed to explain the field dependency of aberration field centers in the image plane of nominally rotationally symmetric optical systems that have lost their symmetry through misalignments. A new insight into the theory led to calculating the sigma vectors, which locate the aberration field centers, using the angle between a real-ray trace of the optical axis ray (OAR) and the normal of the local surface where “local” refers to the object and image optical spaces of that surface. Here, we detail the sigma vector calculations for general optical systems and provide an experimental investigation of a misaligned system with a high-precision customized Cassegrain telescope. In the simulations, a Newtonian telescope, a Cassegrain telescope, and a three-mirror anastigmat telescope were misaligned intentionally in ray-tracing software. The sigma vectors were calculated analytically for the third-order aberrations of astigmatism and coma. Experimentally, the same perturbations were implemented for the Cassegrain telescope system, and the aberrations were quantified through interferometric measurements on a grid of field points in the image plane that verified the analytical derivation and simulations.},

abstract = {Metasurfaces are a promising technology that can serve as a compact alternative to conventional optics while providing multiple functions depending on the properties of the incident light, such as the wavelength, polarization, and incident angle. Here, we demonstrate a hybrid VIS-NIR dielectriac metasurface that can reflect 940 nm light into a specified direction while transmitting visible light (450-750 nm). The dual functionality is realized by combining an aperiodic distributed Bragg reflector with dielectric meta-tokens. Experimental demonstration is also reported, showing an anomalous reflection of near-infrared (NIR) light within a 20o full field-of-view (FOV) and the transmission of wavelengths from 450 nm to 750 nm.},

abstract = {Recently, augmented reality (AR) displays have attracted considerable attention due to the highly immersive and realistic viewer experience they can provide. One key challenge of AR displays is the fundamental trade-off between the extent of the field-of-view (FOV) and the size of the eyebox, set by the conservation of etendue sets this trade-off. Exit-pupil expansion (EPE) is one possible solution to this problem. However, it comes at the cost of distributing light over a larger area, decreasing the overall system's brightness. In this work, we show that the geometry of the waveguide and the in-coupler sets a fundamental limit on how efficient the combiner can be for a given FOV. This limit can be used as a tool for waveguide designers to benchmark the in-coupling efficiency of their in-coupler gratings. We design a metasurface-based grating (metagrating) and a commonly used SRG as in-couplers using the derived limit to guide optimization. We then compare the diffractive efficiencies of the two types of in-couplers to the theoretical efficiency limit. For our chosen waveguide geometry, the metagrating's 28% efficiency surpasses the SRG's 20% efficiency and nearly matches the geometry-based limit of 29% due to the superior angular response control of metasurfaces compared to SRGs. This work provides new insight into the efficiency limit of waveguide-based combiners and paves a novel path toward implementing metasurfaces in efficient waveguide AR displays.},

abstract = {We present simulations and experimental validations for separating astigmatic figure error from misalignments in Nodal Aberration Theory (NAT) with a high-precision Cassegrain telescope. Both the primary mirror figure error and the secondary mirror misalignments induce binodal astigmatism for the telescope systems. The separation of these two aberration factors plays a crucial role in the telescope alignment process. In this study, the figure error of the aspheric primary mirror of the Cassegrain telescope induced by the mirror mounts was measured interferometrically utilizing a computer-generated hologram (CGH). According to the primary mirror figure error, the astigmatic node locations in the image plane were simulated using real raytracing. The center of the nodes was located on the field center, and the nodes were placed symmetrically with respect to the field center in the image plane. The telescope's alignment was performed using the simulation results, and the node locations were measured on a grid of field points interferometrically. Thereafter, secondary mirror misalignments around the coma-free pivot point were introduced into the optical system, and the node's center was shifted from the field center in the image plane as predicted by NAT. The simulations and interferometric field measurements were performed and compared on a grid of field points for the misaligned state in the presence of primary mirror figure error. The experimental results confirm the predictions from NAT. Statistical analysis was also performed to confirm the accuracy and stability of the measurements.},

abstract = {Cubature schemes, in this case for uniformly weighted integration over the unit disk, enable exact evaluation of numerical integrals of polynomials but have been explicitly constructed for only low or moderate degrees. In this paper, cubature formulae are discovered for a wider range of degrees by leveraging numerical optimization. These results include a degree-17 cubature scheme with fewer points than existing solutions and up to a degree-77 solution with 1021 cubature points. Optimization heuristics and patterns in the distributions of cubature points are discussed, which serve as vital guides in this work. For example, these heuristics leverage a connection to circle-packing configurations to facilitate the discovery of fully symmetric cubature schemes.},

abstract = {Freeform optics and metasurfaces are two emerging optical technologies that show promise for addressing the needs of modern consumer devices like augmented and virtual reality (AR/VR) displays and mobile cameras. Recent advances in fabrication and testing have been critical to the success of freeform optics. In parallel, various methods for metasurface fabrication, including electron-beam lithography (EBL), have been researched and well established in the last decade but have been limited to fabrication on flat substrates. Metaform is a new optical component that consists of a metasurface conformed to a freeform substrate. We will explore the advances in nodal aberration theory, freeform design methodology, nanofabrication, and metrology necessary to make metaform optics a reality. To validate the developed processes and highlight the advantages of metaforms, we will examine a compact metaform imager inspired by the needs of AR displays. By leveraging the benefits of both metasurfaces and freeform optics, metaforms can thus be used to navigate critical design tradeoffs between optical performance, system volume, and form factor.},

abstract = {Additive manufacturing is a disruptive technology that can be leveraged by the redesign of components in most engineering fields. Fundamental engineering resources for lightweight mirrors were developed more than 30 years ago with a main design limitation, state of the art manufacturing. Here, we present two design methodologies for the design of lightweight mirrors. The first method utilizes analytical expressions to design a traditional isogrid mirror, which provided the foundation for most lightweight mirrors to date. The second method employs a combination of topology optimization, lattice infill, and analytical estimation to develop an advanced lightweight mirror designed for additive manufacturing. The advanced mirror design outperforms the traditional design for each functional requirement, including a 94% reduction in predicted surface quilting and a higher specific stiffness. The manufacturing of the advanced mirror is only possible with an additive manufacturing process.},

Analysis of experimental results and comparison with a commercial low-coherence-length interferometer shows that freeform phase plates with different magnitude of wavefront slopes can be accurately characterized. RMS accuracy of ∼ λ/10 and precision of ∼ λ/70 at 633 nm were achieved with pixelated filters having 2.5-µm pixels. Simulations that describe the characterization of a freeform optical component in the presence of photodetection noise and filter nonlinearity demonstrate the robustness of this wavefront-sensing approach for freeform optics characterization.},

We report on an approach leveraging freeform optics to linearize spectrometers in k to achieve an extremely low residual k-nonlinearity in design. A freeform lens reduced the k-nonlinearity from 2.47% for a benchmark spectrometer to 2.79 × 10−5% and 3.36 × 10−9% using the Fringe Zernike coefficients up to the 16th term and 37th term, respectively. A simulation model was developed to evaluate the performance of SD-OCT with the designed spectrometers. Without the k-interpolation in software, results show that the two freeform spectrometers achieve a roll-off gain of 5.24 dB over the imaging depth from 0.5 to 5.5 mm, while the maximum imaging depth is 5.8 mm. Finally, a 4.2-µm-FWHM axial PSF was maintained throughout the imaging depth in air.},

Reflective surfaces are inherently achromatic and can be produced in volume, but rotationally symmetric reflective surfaces are either used with lossy obscurations or are incapable of correcting rotationally variant aberrations when used in an unobscured form. Freeform optics enable unobscured reflective design forms with excellent image quality. Here, we document the design, fabrication, and assembly of an all-reflective high-end electronic viewfinder that shows the applicability of freeform surfaces to eyepiece design forms.},

The simulation results are validated with reported experimental results for silicon and applied to Nd:YAG crystals with experimental validation. Stress-induced waveguides are written in Nd:YAG crystals using 515 nm, 300 fs pulses at a 1 kHz repetition rate. Waveguides having a mean propagation loss of 0.21 ± 0.06 dB/cm are obtained, which is lower than the previous reported values for Type-II waveguides written in Nd:YAG crystals. The modeling and experimental results consistently show that the modification (waveguide track) depth increases with input energy. A detailed analysis is presented to control the modal properties of the waveguide in the context of UPPE simulation.},

This novel laser delivers burst energies up to 400 μJ, providing flexible intra-pulse repetition rates of 0.88 or 3.52 GHz, up to 200 pulses with ∼350 fs pulse duration. High-efficiency, high-quality ablation can be achieved through optimally determining the number of pulses, intra-pulse repetition, and average pulse energy within a burst. Due to such optimization, we demonstrate a specific ablation rate of 2.5 mm3∕ min ∕W with a burst containing 200 pulses at 0.88 GHz, which is the highest one reported so far for fs laser ablation, to the best of our knowledge. GHz ablation is sensitive to the selection of laser parameters. We conceptually discuss the contributions of the pulses within a burst to heat-accumulation-based incubation and material ablation.},

This relationship allows parameterizing off-axis conic optical systems using traditional first-order optics by considering the effective curvature at the center of the off-axis sections. Specifically, we demonstrate parameterizing the system requirements of a 2{texttimes} achromatic image relay for a terawatt laser system. This system required both collimation (far-field) and pupil imaging (near-field) simultaneously. Long working distances and specific spatial constraints limited the available layout options for the imaging components. By parameterizing these system requirements and packaging constraints, the final specifications could be quickly iterated, while allowing for flexibility in the layout of the system during a multi-year conceptual period.},

abstract = {Driven by the development of freeform four-mirror solutions, we review and compare analytical methods to generate starting point designs with various states of correction, surface types, symmetry, and obscuration. The advantages and disadvantages of each are examined. We have combined several concepts and techniques from the literature to analytically generate unobscured freeform starting point designs that are corrected through the third-order image degrading aberrations. The surfaces in these starting point designs are described as base off-axis conics that image stigmatically for the central field point, also known as Cartesian reflectors, with an aspheric departure “cap” (quartic with the aperture) added to the Cartesian reflectors. Tilt angles are chosen to cancel field-asymmetric field-linear astigmatism and unobscure the system. Paraxial data from an equivalent on-axis system are used to solve a system of linear equations to determine the magnitude of the aspheric departure “caps” that are placed on top of the base Cartesian reflectors, in order to eliminate the remaining third-order image degrading aberrations. In this approach, each aspheric departure “cap” is centered about the intersection of the optical-axis-ray, also known as the base ray, with the base surface, rather than being centered about the axis of rotational invariance.},

abstract = {Spatially dithered distributions of binary amplitude pixels are optimized using a full direct binary search, taking into account the experimental configuration for amplitude modulation of coherent waves. This design process is shown to yield a significant reduction of the noise induced by binarization and pixelation over the region of interest. We demonstrate this approach for beam shaping and optical differentiation wavefront sensing, where the region of interest is in an image plane of the pixel distribution, and in the far field of the pixel distribution, respectively. The observed reduction in error compared to a standard error diffusion algorithm is significant for both applications because it improves performance without the tighter fabrication tolerance and cost associated with smaller pixels.},
