EON is a space startup backed by Andreessen Horowitz and General Catalyst**,** aimed at supplementing and eventually replacing subsea fiber with free-space optics. With an initial constellation of approximately 20 satellites in Medium Earth Orbit (MEO), EON will deliver multi-Tbps bandwidth between the most important backhaul end-points in the world. Based in Los Angeles, California, EON is building a state-of-the-art optics facility to develop in-space and ground hardware.
In Q4 2027, EON will be launching a demonstration mission to Low Earth Orbit (LEO) that will conduct the highest-ever optical transmission between space and the ground. EON’s potential customers will include hyperscalers, AI labs, CDNs, streaming services, governments, and many other enterprises responsible for moving large amounts of data.
EON’s work spans the full optical chain, including meter-class telescopes both on orbit and on the ground, adaptive optics correcting atmospheric turbulence in real time, coherent laser links closing over tens of thousands of kilometers, and coupling that light into single-mode fiber at the receiver. EON is looking to collaborate with researchers and students across these fields to enable the future of global network infrastructure.
